The More Things Change...

They say that history repeats itself. This has certainly been the case in Washington the last two weeks. Senior members of the house are carrying around history books, trying to decide who to emulate. Reid is currently fond of FDR, McConnell and Cantor of Winston Churchill and Newt Gingrich. Each are looking for clues on how to best spin the stimulus bill fight and its potential political aftermath. Both Republicans and Democrats are pinning the future hopes of their parties on this legislation, with both knowing the outcome of the 2010 mid-term elections is riding on its success.
The Republicans are still holding firm to the doctrine of trickle down economics through corporate and individual tax cuts and breaks, believing that money given to the upper strata and corporations will boost spending, and therefore production, which will reduce unemployment and kick start a flagging economy. However, history has not shown trickle down economics to be successful; corporations have tended to want to keep its wealth for itself and many people are saving their money instead of spending it and promoting business growth.
Only time will tell who is right, but the way this whole situation has played out goes to show one thing. No matter how strong the mandate for change is, old habits die hard. Bipartisanship, like world peace and a delicious non-fat cheesecake, is an idyllic vision we can dream of and hope for. It seems to be just as realistic too.

Top-level comments on this article: (3 total)I see socialism in our futures. Is that the "Change" he had in mind? So predictable.Today it's socialism, 4 years ago it was terrorism, 20 years ago it was communism- the Republican party loves to have any -ism to use as an excuse to throw up a smokescreen to hide the fact that it's same tired old way of doing things just doesn't work. Look at the timings of the worst recessionsof the last 40 years- all of them came at the end of Republican presidencies. But I'm sure that's all just coincidence...
This article was a joke. She attacks bipartisanism with bipartisan statements. Bipartisanism could only exist if Conservatives surrender their values. I would also argue with her on these points: In America under a true capitalist system, money is earned, and not "given to the upper strata and corporations." The people who earn the money, whether they be corporations or individuals, should be allowed to keep the fruits of their labor. Those individuals who choose not to work hard, or who do not obtain for themselves marketable skills should not be allowed to pilfer through the ballot box from those who do. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is part of the Communist Manifesto, not the US Constitution. I know the Red Menace and challenged her on her liberal political views, offering to partner with her in a local effort to assist the homeless. She declined. Her view of helping others is simple...empower the federal government to take from others what they have earned and redistribute the wealth to the poor. To her this is charity. To me this is a criminal act.Actually he does NOT know me- we have never met or spoken. We emailed back and forth a few times. He made assumptions about me based on a few comments and directly insulted me personally. I didn't reject doing charity work- I happen to do quite a lot of it. I rejected doing charity work with HIM.If he was so right and so confident in his beliefs, then maybe he would not feel the need to insult people he does not know and has never met based on the assumptions about them and their character distilled from a blog.Hahahahaaaaa.....he was turned down now he's disgruntled. Get a life dude.
empower the federal government to take from others what they have earned and redistribute the wealth to the poor.To me that smells of "Democrat", now pass the beer nuts.
